Updated on 2017-03-19 – This McDavid Knee Brace is a great choice if you’ve been sidelined by knee problems and you are just itching to get back into the game, without necessarily affecting your bank account. McDavid classifies this knee brace as a Level 3 brace, which is designed to “provide maximum support, while at the same time reducing your chance of injury, increased medial/lateral stability, as well as helping with recovery.” Keep reading for our take on this fantastic knee support.
McDavid Knee Brace Info & Review
The main purpose of this knee brace is to stabilize the kneecap and prevent it from moving around. It also provides much needed compression, which helps alleviate mild to moderate knee pain. Word of caution though, in order to enjoy all the benefits of this brace, you have to make sure that you follow the sizing chart to avoid the mistake others have made, which is to buy the wrong size. If you aren’t sure how to measure for a knee brace, follow the instructions in my “How To Measure For A Knee Brace” post. Here’s a copy of the sizing chart:
Although this brace has many great features, I will focus on the ones that I find are the most important. First, it’s easy to put and and take off. For me, this is a must since I am fairly active (and busy) so I don’t have the time to spend adjusting it all the time. The second is the padded horseshoe buttress which is there to protect the knee cap. The third is the set of hinges on both sides of the brace, which limit the medial and lateral movements. The last two combined offer the stability that you need if you want to continue playing sports.
The downside of this brace is that it is fairly bulky so don’t plan on putting a pair of jeans over them. It’s not going to happen. Also, because of the bulkiness, I don’t find that it breathes as well as other braces. After longer periods of use, sweating will be a factor.
