A while ago I posted an article called How To Wash a Knee Brace and since then I’ve been asked a few times if there are any detergents I recommend to get the job done. Based on some of the feedback I received, it looks like there are a lot of cleaning solutions out there that just aren’t cutting it when it comes to getting rid of the odour.
Because there are so many out there, it would be impossible for me to review them all; however, there are 2 that I have used in the past that I would like to recommend because they have worked well for me, on pretty much any sports equipment I’ve used them on.
Nathan Sport-Wash Laundry Detergent
The Nathan Sport-Wash product is one of my favorites because it doesn’t contain bleach, fabric softener, or brighteners and rinses out without leaving any residue. It can be used on most fabrics that sports equipment is made of, which includes cotton, nylon, polyester, microfiber and synthetics.
I recommend this product for knee braces as well as any of your fitness equipment (hockey, jerseys, dry-fit shirts, etc.) because it doesn’t affect breath-ability and insulation. You don’t have to take my word for it. Here are some other reviews I’ve found on-line:
I volunteer at a marine mammal rescue center and spend my days mucking around in fish and the things seals and sea lions leave behind. I wear foul weather coveralls, and let me tell you, at the end of a shift, my clothes reek!! I use this stuff to get the smell out and retain the waterproofing. My slicks are three years old, and still keeping the water out. Works like a charm!
I’ve been using this on our synthetics for the last year and they still look brand new. Cleans, and gets rid of the body odor. It’s awesome!
I generally order it on-line and buy at least 2 every time I put an order in. That way, when I get down to one bottle, I just place my next order and never run out! It also comes in travel packs which makes it a great product if you are constantly on the go. Click HERE for more reviews on this great product!
Tide With Febreze Freshness Sport Active Fresh
A lot of people might not have noticed, but Tide developed this new product to compete with all the other “sports” detergents out there, and I have to tell you, it does a pretty good job. It was designed mainly for sports equipment, but I tried it with my last knee brace and it worked like a charm.
The main difference from the Nathan Sports-Wash is that this one leaves behind a Febreze scent when you are done washing your equipment, which is one of the reasons why it is a huge favorite among sports enthusiasts. I agree that it does a great job at getting rid of body odor and mildew smell, however the fact that there is a Febreze “leftover” smell, is the reason why I put this 2nd on my list. Some people love the smell of Febreze, which means this product will be great for them.
Another great feature of this product is its availability. It is very easy to find in local stores. Again, you don’t have to take my word for it… here are some other reviews I found on-line:
This is the very best Laundry Detergent ever !!! My husband works underground and comes home so dirty that he has to take his clothes off in the garage. Thank you for Tide Sport. In the first wash, all the old stains that never came out were are all gone !! It’s unreal. Just use half of what it tells you to use and that is all you need. Jen Miami Fl..
I’ve used a lot of different detergents, I’ve always chosen based on smell because hey they are all the same right? Well I just recently learned that I was way wrong. I had a white shirt that I had gotten pasta sauce on and no amount of bleaching pretreating would get it off. The first time I used Tide Sport that stain came out. I was shocked. I recommended this to my family and friends. I also suggested it to people with big families who don’t use tide because they do a lot of laundry and they can’t afford it” Anonymous, Bethlehem,PA

If you are stuck with stanky old sports clothes or equipment and you don’t think there is anything you can do… give one of these a try. If it doesn’t work, you can still use the product to clean your regular clothes.
Have you tried either of these? Any others? How did they work out for you?
Until next time.
