Do Knee Compression Sleeves Work for Running?

Compression is the new black.

I’m not talking about fashion, either.  I’m talking about the benefits of wearing Knee Compression Sleeves while you’re on your regular running training.   But that leaves us with a big question…Do knee compression sleeves work for running?

Knee Compression sleeves, or sleeves that are designed to apply pressure to an area of your body, have been proven to increase blood flow and help with injury prevention.   They achieve this via reducing swelling, increasing blood flow, and also reducing Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS).

Knee Sleeves improve performance by making your blood flow faster, which results in effective oxygen delivery and nutrients to your muscles.

So, do knee compression sleeves work for running? The answer is YES

Let’s find out a bit more of the inner workings of knee compression sleeves.

How do Knee Sleeves Work for Running? What are the benefits?

A knee compression sleeve is a specially designed piece of material that you slip over your knee.  The specially designed components of the sleeve are there to provide targeted compression in and around the knee joint while you run.  You will feel the knee compression sleeve working shortly after you begin wearing the support aid, as your knee will begin to feel warm, and stay warm as you run.

The benefits of compression to the knee is

  • primarily increased blood flow.  The more blood reaching your knee joint means the cells and muscles in the knee receive more oxygen and nutrients.
  • The compression also helps to reduce any swelling in the knee that may result from running.

Knee sleeves are also great for people who have weak knees or have previous knee injuries,.  Even though my knee feels as strong as ever, I still wear a knee sleeve whenever I go for a run for protection against any injury recurring.  And if you are regular subscriber to my website, then you would know we subscribe to the old adage of “prevention is better than cure“.

Should I Wear a Knee Sleeve While Running

Knee sleeves are not a required item for running.

However, as I mentioned earlier, if you have a history of weak knees or knee injuries then I would strongly recommend using one.  Wearing knee sleeves while running will provide additional strength and support to any weakened parts of the knee joint.

As is the case for me, a knee compression sleeve will also help prevent you from injuring the knee or worse, further damaging other parts of your knee.

Do Knee Sleeves work for Runners Knee?

If you are suffering from Chondromalacia patellae (or runners knee), a knee sleeve can help to reduce the symptoms you experience while running.  However, you may not be able to use just any knee sleeve you find at your local Wal Mart.

If you have been diagnosed with runners knee, I would recommend using a knee sleeve that has added support around the knee cap (or patella).  You can find many knee compression sleeves that have gel pads built around the patella for additional support.  In addition to the targeted support, the general compression of the knee sleeve will help to draw blood to the joint, providing much needed oxygen to repair any tissue that is causing the pain.

Are Knee Compression Sleeves the same as Knee Braces?

This is a common mistake many people can make when they first begin their journey into support aids for the knee.  A knee compression sleeve is NOT THE SAME as a knee brace.  To put it simply, a knee sleeve’s primary purpose is to apply compression to the knee joint (for the compression benefits we have discussed earlier in this article).  Whereas a knee brace’s purpose is to provide targeted support to the knee joint.

A good rule of thumb is a knee sleeve will be in a tubular shape made out of one piece of material that you will have to slip on over your foot up to your knee.  Where as a brace can usually be undone to be fitted over the knee and secured by straps.  There are some exceptions to the rule, however this is the case for most knee sleeves and braces.

Another good point of difference is that knee sleeves are primary applied to protect the knee from any future injuries.  Whereas a brace is usually used to support and assist in the recovery of an injury that has already occurred.
